The 19th art historian Giovanni Morelli established a method for the categorization and attribution of works of art based on a process of comparative stylistic analysis that focused on small anatomical details. Until recently, the practice of this fundamental art historical method depended upon and required a direct experience of the works of art in question which could only be accomplished by traveling to museum collections. Due to the advanced imaging technology utilized by Google Art Project, it is now possible to apply Morelli’s connoisseurship method using virtual images and museum walkthroughs that can be accessed online.
